Good to know
The motorcycle market is seasonal and compact: most bikes are listed in spring and bought in summer, while the best prices happen October through February. For beginners the market offers a huge pool of 2000s Japanese middleweights — Honda CB, Yamaha YBR, Suzuki Bandit: undemanding, repairable, with parts still in circulation. City scooters and maxi-scooters live a separate life with the fastest turnover.
When selling a bike, film a cold start — it's the buyer's main test. Service history, even as photos of receipts, adds noticeably more to the price than polished plastics. Disclose drops honestly: the traces show anyway, and one small exposed lie kills trust in the whole listing. Sell gear and cases as separate listings — bundled with the bike, buyers always ask for them 'as a gift'.
Questions & answers
What do I inspect first on a used motorcycle?
Crash evidence: scratches on frame sliders, bar ends, engine covers and the exhaust. A steady idle, clean exhaust and a rust-free chain say more about care than the seller's words.
Can I ride a motorcycle with a category B licence?
No — you need category A (A1 for up to 125cc). Scooters under 50cc formally skip registration, but an A1 licence is still required.
When is the best time to buy a motorcycle?
Autumn and winter prices run 10–20% lower — seasonal demand dip. In spring the same bike costs more and the selection is thinner.
What's the right first motorcycle?
The classic starter range is 250–400cc: enough dynamics for the highway and forgiving in town. A used Japanese bike of that class runs from 60–90 thousand hryvnias. A supersport as a first bike is the shortest road to a crash — the throttle and the riding position aren't for learning.
What does a season cost beyond the bike itself?
A minimal gear set (helmet, gloves, armored jacket) is 8–15 thousand hryvnias new, half that used. Add insurance and post-winter maintenance (oil, pads, chain) — a few thousand more. Budget for it upfront.
The bike wintered outside: buy or pass?
Inspect harder: tank condensation means rust, seals and rubber stiffen, the battery is usually dead. All fixable — and a fair 10–15% haggling argument — but an unwinterized 'street' bike needs a full service before the season.
