Good to know

The used tool market is one where a professional past is an advantage: builders refresh their fleets, and proven-series workhorses hit the listings at half price. Makita, Bosch Professional and DeWalt on battery platforms are the most liquid segment: batteries interchange within a brand, so expanding your platform second-hand is the smart money. Generators and power stations are their own category — a national staple since the blackouts.

When selling tools, show them working on video — 30 seconds of drilling answers 90% of questions. State the purchase year and honest usage: 'home use, shelf drilling' and 'daily site work' are different prices. A bundle (case, bits, second battery) lifts the price by more than the parts cost separately. Serial numbers in photos clear suspicions of stolen goods.

Questions & answers

How do I test a power tool before buying?

Run it under load: brush sparking beyond light is a haggling point, the smell of burnt windings is your cue to leave. Check chuck runout and spindle play.

DIY or professional line — how to tell and which to take?

Bosch DIY is green, professional is blue; Makita's pro line is metal-bodied and heavier. For home use DIY is enough; for daily work a used pro tool beats a new DIY one at the same price.

Used cordless tools: what matters?

Batteries are the real cost. Ask how many packs and from what year, test runtime under load. A dead battery can cost half the whole kit.

Corded or cordless tools for home use?

For home: a cordless drill-driver (80% of household tasks) plus a corded hammer drill for concrete — needed rarely, and corded is stronger and cheaper. A fully cordless fleet makes sense once you own two or three batteries of one platform.

A used generator: how do I test it before buying?

A cold start in front of you (a warm engine hides problems), a steady sound without stumbles, voltage measured under load — ask to plug in a kettle or heater. Engine hours if there's a meter; oil color on the dipstick. Test inverter models with sensitive electronics.

Which Soviet-era hand tools are worth buying, and which aren't?

Worth it: bench tools — vises, clamps, hammers, factory-stamped wrenches — the steel often beats modern budget stock. Not worth it: measuring tools with lost calibration and anything electrical — without grounding and modern protection it's unsafe.
